Questions About Becoming A Christian?

What does it mean to be a Christian?

A Christian, simply put, is a sinner who has been forgiven by God and has begun to follow Jesus. They have not been given immediate perfection, but a brand new direction in life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” It’s not about trying to keep laws to win God’s favour. It’s about admitting that we aren’t perfect and placing our trust in the one who is. It’s about leaving behind the sins of our past and striving to be more and more like Christ in both actions and desires. A Christian’s focus is no longer on this temporary world, but in the eternal kingdom where he/she will one day dwell.

How do I become a Christian?

There is no sin that you have committed that God isn’t willing to forgive. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Not only is the way of salvation a free gift, but it is also simple. You must:

• Acknowledge your sin – The Bible states that everyone has sinned and failed to meet God’s standard of goodness (Romans 3:23). Our pride often leads us to boast in our own charitable acts, and to see ourselves as good peoplein comparison to the sins of others. However, all our claims for goodness are as filthy rags in the eyes of God (Isaiah 64.6). We must humble ourselves and confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9).
• Believe – Not only must you believe that God exists, but that he also sent his Son to pay the price for your sin on the cross. (John 3 v 16). Without faith in God, it is impossible to please him. Thankfully, God has promised to draw near to those that diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6, James 4:8). If this is something you struggle with, allow him to speak through the Bible. (Romans 10:17).
• Repent (Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38, 3:19) – To repent is to be truly sorry for your sins. This naturally leads to both a change in behaviour and desires, leaving behind the pleasures of the world that offend God. This is a change that is not a result of a fear of being caught or punished, but a hatred of the thing God hates.

Place your trust in Jesus Christ as your one and only saviour and today you will be a Christian!

What now?

If you have accepted Christ’s offer of salvation, you may be asking yourself, “What now? How do I live as a Christian in today’s world?” Here are a few steps in the right direction:

• Read the Bible often – The Bible contains all the information that you need in order to live a life that pleases God. Not only can we learn more about who God is, but we can also learn timeless wisdom that can help us grow spiritually and understand God’s will for our lives.
• Pray daily – Prayer is simply means of talking directly to God. Take time out of your day to lay down your worries and frustrations, to ask for guidance and to express to thankfulness to the Lord. It is a daily admission that we need him through every step of our lives.
• Get involved in a local church – It is very important for a new believer to find a local church that faithfully preaches the Bible. Not only is it important to receive teaching from the word of God, but it is also vital that Christians surround themselves with fellow believers who will help each other to grow in their faith.
• Tell others about Jesus – God has worked a miracle in your life, but there are countless people in your local area and across the world who still need to hear the gospel. God has commanded that we make his name known (Matthew 28:18-20). This is the very reason why SERVE exists.

It is important to note that while feelings come and go, your salvation is steadfast. God never promised a life free of hardship or even pain, but he has promised that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:35-39). It is our hope that you continue to follow and serve Jesus throughout your life.
